How to Reply to an Ad

Replying to an Ad

1. Make a Shortlist

If you are thinking of responding to a personal ad, take a look through all the possibilities with a highlighter pen and pick out the words that strike a chord with you. Have a think about what appeals to you and what, on the other hand, is a definite turn-off. However, be warned, just because someone says that they're witty and gorgeous, it doesn't necessarily make it true.

Of course it is entirely up to you as to what you think are the important qualities, but use your criteria to help narrow down your search. If you are passionate about something, look for someone with the same interests. You may be looking for someone with a great sense of humour, in which case, don't just go for someone who describes himself as having a GSOH; see if they have demonstrated their humour within the ad itself.

If you get confused by the sheer number of adverts you are having to choose from, circle as many as you like then go back over your choices until you have a shortlist of people who you would like to meet. Around 5 is a good number to start off with.

2. Leave Your Message

If you are replying to an advert by voicemail, listen to what they have to say, before hanging up and spending a little bit of time composing your reply. When you phone back, keep your message short, light, focused and honest, leaving a mobile number or email address for them to contact you if they are interested. Don't get too bogged down with telling them all the details of your life - entice them with a few choice pieces of information - if they're interested, there'll be plenty of time to fill them in on the rest.
