Dating Body Language

Body language is not only important when you first meet someone, but also on any dates you might go on together.

Are They Interested in You ...

If someone is really interested in you, they will often mirror your movements, gestures and body positions. You may also notice that they try to sit or stand close to you, with their legs or shoulders touching yours. They will probably also laugh when you laugh and lean in towards you. Look out for other signs, such as 'accidentally' brushing your arm or your hand or gazing at your lips as they wonder what it would be like to kiss them.

... Or Not?

If your date doesn't display any of these positive signals, or constantly looks around the room, then they may be regretting meeting up with you. Look out for the following warning signs:

They begin to fidget and look distracted

  • They avoid eye contact
  • They do not mirror your body language
  • They yawn or rub their eyes
  • They fiddle with the cutlery, their collar, their tie, the salt pot, their cigarette lighter ...
  • Their smile seems less spontaneous and more stretched

If you notice that they display two or more of these signs (especially if this is in combination with a stilted conversation), then the chances of a future relationship do not look good. Learn to recognise the signals so that you can walk away with dignity.
